Tired of My Desk

Working from home is sometime boring, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting places to work from, outside the home.
This one is perfect. The comute is great as long as you are willing to drive 4 hours in each direction, each day (just wake up early in the morning and start driving West from Raleigh). You can finish with a great ride on Blue Ridge Parkway and with the crossing of the (not so) Swinging (anymore) Bridge. The view is great and the wind provides the white noise for concentration. Just watch your steps and you're good.
The only problem you may have is using a glossy monitor, especially one that seems to have gathered enough filth (although I just cleaned it 3 days before) like the one in the image. There's enough space for a team there so if you're interested, by all means, take a look...

Getting Old - The Tech Way

I think I am getting old. How can I tell that? Well, it just happens that I was listening to The Black Keys on my iPod and I started shaking the iPod to the beat but, because I had the 'shake to shuffle' feature on, it skipped the song. Now, here's why I know I am getting old: the first thought through my head was 'shit, the disk skipped'.

The Call of Cthulhu

I am not a big conspiracy theory fan, actually I'm more of a debunking enthusiast, but take a look at the two images in this article. I took the pictures in some museum/exposition/whatever - shame on me for not remembering it right now - in Greensboro, NC. It was behind a glass wall so I couldn't touch it but it looked like dried skin. Two questions popped into my mind right away:
  1. What is Cthulhu doing in North Carolina.
  2. Is it/he/He/HE shedding?
I'll answer the questions from the bottom.
Since I am pretty sure that the guy is a little bigger in reality I can only surmise that this is an older form and that he is actually shedding. However, judging by the perfect shape and seemingly hollow tentacles, I am pretty sure that he's, in fact, molting.

As for the first question, I think it's pretty simple. We all know that  the guy is supposed to be living in R'lyeh which is somewhere in the middle of the biggest patches of open ocean water. Now, he's been around for quite a while and Lovecraft may have easily projected his story into the present (1900) although the story may be a lot older, in fact older than Columbus / Eric the Red / Coke addicted Pharaoh/etc 'S trip(s) so it wouldn't be far fetched to suggest that the land in the big patch of ocean is the two Americas. Wait, don't laugh it off! Here comes the real part: R'lyeh looks eerily similar to Raleigh which is the capital of North Carolina and lies about 80 miles E-S-E of Greensboro, NC.
How about that? Messed up, right?

Edit: it seems that the mask was not behind glass. I guess it was just my contacts.

The Lighthouse

Walking through the half-empty shelves in the Border store that's about to close I came upon Snooki's book and, as usual, I had to look at the books around it. Well, this time it wasn't E.A. Poe, it was a Romanian author that I haven't heard about, ever before. Next time you're in a bookstore look for the book and then browse its neighbors because you may have nice surprises. I don't advise you to buy the book and the reason for this is not its content, it's just that if you do buy it you'll remove an important landmark that will leave many book lovers without a guiding light in their darkest hour.

Nooooooooooo!

Pity. I'm pretty sure they are going out of business and they're the closest to my house. I wonder if the whole chain is going out of business or just a few of the stores here and there. At least I got a couple of good books for a good price (Brian Greene and Aldous Huxley). Most of the good books were already gone. There were a lot of empty shelves in the literature section. Not sure how the Kobo's selling, but the price seems to be $99 and they still had a few in the store.

Hmmm, O.K...

Is this an attempt to make Snooki more visible or is it an effort to remind people that no matter what they have in mind when they go into a bookstore there is always a better alternative?

The Ice Cream Report

The best of both worlds.

Quote of the week

On the tip jar/mini-bucket on the Coffee & Crepes counter:

"If you fear change leave it here".
